The Olympics are inspiring for athletes of all sports. With Canadian swimming on the rise, and the increased profile of many Canadian swimmers on the national and international stage, this Olympics serves to inspire us all, and more importantly inspire our swimmers!
—–
“It will be and excellent motivator for National Team swimmers and future generations of Canadian Olympians”

VANCOUVER (February 9, 2010) – As the World will turn to Canada for 2010 Winter Olympiads in a less than a week, several Canadian Olympic swimmers will move from the warm waters of a pool to the cold ice and snow, to support, cheer, but most of all, get re-energized by the Games.

Brent Hayden of Mission BC, Annamay Pierse of Edmonton, Scott Dickens of Burlington ON, Rick Say of Salmon Arm, Benoit Huot of Montreal and Richard Hortness of Medicine Hat will be amongst the swimming Olympians engaged in the Winter Games. In addition, Swimming Canada CEO and National Coach Pierre Lafontaine will be onsite as part of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) Coaching Mentorship Program.

Passing on the Torch

For 3-time Swimming Olympian Rick Say, the 2010 Winter Games will be his fourth, but this time, Rick will be contributing to the athletes well-being by servicing and mentoring Whistler based competitors. As an athlete representative for the COC mission staff, Say will share his experiences from past games and ensure that the athletes get the services they need in their new home.

“It’s very important that our Canadian athletes feel at ease with all the extras you get when you compete at an Olympic Games,” said Say. “The COC has put together a terrific group of experts to help facilitate our athletes’ stay in the village and I’m very happy to be part of contributing to their success.”

Building future leaders

Pierre Lafontaine, a prominent name in Canadian and International sports, will be providing mentorship opportunities to Summer Coaches who are on the brink of becoming the next wave of Olympic level Coaches.

“My role with these young coaches will be to get them to experience all the little details you have to face when you’re at major multi-sport games. Whether it’s team logistics, transportation, accreditation, athlete villages, working with the media, taking part in these sessions will be a valuable opportunity for them to live it before they hit the ground in London 2012” said Lafontaine.

Building Dreams

Three-time Paralympic Swimming Champion Benoit Huot of Montreal will be spending time promoting and advocating Canadian Olympic and Paralympic sports as part of the Canadian Pavilion based in Vancouver. “My role will be to talk about sports to the general public. It’s great to be involved in the Vancouver games and talk to people on a something that I’m so passionate about,” said Huot.

Vancouver based Olympic swimmers Annamay Pierse, Brent Hayden and Scott Dickens will be returning home from warm weather winter training camps. Being in Vancouver during the Games was an important part of their preparation for this summer’s major events.

“It is always motivational to see fellow Canadians succeed, and I try as much as possible to use that as inspiration for my own swimming,” says Pierse. “Seeing how well Canadians do this winter is for sure going to help my swimming this summer, I want to carry on the success of our nation, and will be training extra hard to do so.”

Hayden says that having the Olympics hosted in Canada is a great motivator as he prepares to compete in the 2012 London Games. “It’ll help refocus my training on the Olympics again and will obviously motivate me for my competitions this summer,” says Hayden.

Beijing Olympian Richard Hortness, will be actively supporting his fellow Olympians and inspiring young ones during the Games.

“Canadians will get to witness so many great performances, and I think it will be an eye opener as to why it’s important to support athletes and sports,” says Hortness.

Members of the Canadian National Swim Team will be hitting the waters this spring at the Pan Pacific Trials in Montreal which will mark the beginning of the long course swimming season.

With all the recent issues revolving polyurethane suits, what’s allowed and what’s not, and the world records falling left right and center FINA’s decision to ban non-permeable suits seems to make sense. With that in mind they’ve now put out a list of suits which are considered legal and allowed in international training.

This list doesn’t include the likes of the former LZR Racer, the Jaked suit that made history when Alain Bernard broke a world record wearing it, or any of the other controversial outfits. It’s good to take a look over for familiarity’s sake and is the most up to date document on what’s allowed. It does however include the LZR Elite and the newest line of Speedo suits which are the latest in the ever evolving line of compression suits.

OTTAWA (January, 26, 2010) – Olympic and world championship team member Tobias Oriwol of Pointe-Claire, Que., announced he would make a return to competitive swimming this spring and train with the Toronto Academy of Swimming.

After competing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Oriwol made a decision to focus on his urban planning studies at Harvard University in Boston. He is currently completing his Masters and plans to return to Canada in the late spring to resume his swimming career after an 18-month absence from the pool.

“Soon after I decided to stop swimming after the 2008 Olympics, I realized I missed it,” said Oriwol, 24. “But I had made the decision I would devote the next two years to my studies. Still it was in the back of my mind that I would come back to swimming again.”

Over the Christmas holidays, Oriwol looked at the possibilities of training at the national centres in Victoria, Montreal or Toronto. The Ontario capital provided some familiarity and in addition his parents currently reside in Etobicoke.

“What attracted me to Toronto is that I already know some of the swimmers on the team as well as Byron MacDonald (coach) and I had some very positive meetings with head coach John Rodgers as well.”

Rodgers is a former coach with the Australian national program who led his swimmers to eight Olympic medals. He was hired this past fall to lead the program at the Toronto Academy of Swimming.

In addition, Canada’s revival in international swimming over the past couple of years has also inspired Oriwol.

“I feel like I just missed out on a very exciting time in Canadian swimming,” he said. “Watching the latest results there’s some great things happening in Canadian swimming and I would love to be a part of that.”

Oriwol has been a fixture on the Canadian national swimming scene since age 15 when he made his first world championship team in 2001. He is a seven-time national champion and has also raced for Canada at the Pan American Games, Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships.

He knows he faces a major challenge to return to the form that made him one of Canada’s top individual medley and backstroke swimmers.

“I haven’t been training as much as I would like in the past two years but that’s O.K.,” he said. “My plan was to put all of my time into school. But I’m keeping in touch with the coaches and sports sciences department at the Academy so I can build a base for myself training-wise once I arrive in Toronto full time.”

For 2010, Oriwol has set realistic goals.

“After taking 18 months off we’re just going to focus on getting back to where I was before and build from there towards the 2012 Olympics.”

“It’s a realistic challenge because I know I will receive the proper training, planning and support to achieve my goals.”

Ontario Cup is a great opportunity for the senior swimmers to race for the first time since the holiday season. Most of the athletes at this meet are under heavy workload and this can make it tough to go fast but the value of good racing is still there. Vanessa Treasure and Austin Rockett both finished with impressive 2nd place finishes, Vanessa in the 200 fly and Austin in the 200 free. Rachel Sehn has a great 400 free in one of the best paced races in her career with proper planned splitting. Andrew Vo had strong early season results while battling a cold for the last couple weeks. Many swimmers seem to be able to control their strokes under stress and this was one of the main goals of the meet.

Joaquin Rabsiun, Michael Decsey, and Isabella Olivares all had breakthrough swims demonstrating control of technique and speed. Kim Nguyen was good in the 50 back and 50 free with in season best swims. Jackie Chan, Nicolette Goncalves, and Alexandra Jozwiak were all feeling the effects of a tough week leading up to the meet, work that will benefit them in February but makes it challenging in January. Megan Vuong was among swimmers trying to gain valuable experience competing as a young swimmer at a senior meet. Janica Lee also showing good early season form in both breastroke and butterfly completed her 1st 200 fly of the season in 2:35, best time by nine seconds.

Congratulations to Rachel Sehn who’s a TAS employee and budding swimming star!

Things that hadn’t fallen until the high tech suits changed the face of swimming.
